What is ZODIAC?

ZODIAC Observatory enables secure, multinational collaboration on medical imaging datasets and supports AI model development and evaluation.

Clinical and imaging data are expensive to collect but often underused when stored in isolation. For respiratory diseases, and especially during emerging outbreaks, limited access to diverse imaging data can slow research and response.

The ZODIAC Observatory brings institutions together to securely share and harmonise clinical and radiological data, enabling large-scale research, advancing lung imaging analysis, and supporting rapid international collaboration.

The initiative is connected through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and fosters international cooperation to enable secure data sharing, harmonised methodologies, and collaborative scientific advancement.

Workflow overview

Four steps, designed to be simple and consistent across centres.

1) Anonymize

De-identify DICOM prior to submission.

2) Upload

Submit anonymised studies to the repository.

3) Govern access

Apply permissions and centre governance.

4) Train & evaluate

Develop algorithms using curated multicentre data.
